The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast continues to stand out as one of South Africa’s most appealing coastal holiday destinations, offering beautiful beaches, subtropical scenery, seaside villages and a wide variety of outdoor activities.
For the 2026/2027 Blue Flag season, the KZN South Coast has 11 beaches listed with full Blue Flag status and five beaches participating in the Blue Flag Pilot Programme, according to the supplied 2026 Blue Flag sites document.
These beaches fall within the Ray Nkonyeni and Umdoni municipal areas, extending from the popular holiday beaches around Scottburgh and Pennington to the coastline around Hibberdene, Port Shepstone, Margate, Southbroom and Port Edward.
For visitors planning a family holiday, weekend escape or coastal road trip, understanding which beaches have full Blue Flag status and which are participating in the pilot programme can help when choosing where to spend time along the coast.

Green Coast Awards
The Blue Flag programme is an internationally recognised environmental award for beaches, marinas and sustainable tourism boats. It is managed internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), with WESSA coordinating the programme in South Africa.
To achieve full Blue Flag accreditation, beaches must meet established requirements covering environmental education, water quality, environmental management, safety and services.
These requirements include regular bathing-water testing, environmental information, appropriate waste management, public facilities and safety arrangements.
Blue Flag accreditation provides visitors with useful information about beach management standards. However, it does not guarantee that swimming conditions will always be safe. Visitors should still follow lifeguard instructions, observe warning flags and check local beach conditions before entering the water.
Water safety and sea water quality are the primary requirements for gaining Blue Flag status.
Bathing water quality must be tested regularly and displayed on the Blue Flag information board. A map showing the boundaries of the Blue Flag beach area and the location of key facilities and services must also be posted.
Scottburgh have been recognised under the Blue Flag Pilot Programme for the 2026/2027 season — a significant step toward achieving full Blue Flag status. This initiative highlights the commitment of local municipalities and community partners to improving beach management, environmental awareness, and visitor facilities along the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. As pilot beaches, both sites are working to meet the international standards for water quality, safety, and environmental education set by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and WESSA. Their inclusion in the programme reflects ongoing progress and dedication to maintaining clean, safe, and sustainable coastal destinations for residents and holidaymakers alike.
