Tweni2’s Surfing & Music Showdown Returns to The Spot Backpackers – 13 June 2026

A mix of live music, great food, beach culture, and high-performance surfing is set to return to the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast as Tweni2’s Surfing & Music Event lands at The Spot Backpackers in Umtentweni on 13 June 2026.

What started as a local idea between friends has grown into one of the most exciting coastal community events in the region — combining professional-level surfing, live entertainment, and a full family-friendly beach day experience.

This year’s edition promises another unforgettable showdown in true South Coast style.

A Surf Contest Built on Community & Competition

Tweni2’s has become known for its unique pairs surfing format, attracting some of South Africa’s top surfers alongside international competitors.

The event continues to grow in reputation, drawing talent from across the country — including two visiting teams from Holland joining the lineup this year.

Among the standout competitors is last year’s multiple-time winner Chad du Toit, returning with a highly anticipated secret partner that has already sparked plenty of speculation in the local surf community.

Also making waves this year is a powerful visiting team featuring:

  • Travis Logie
  • Warrick Wright

Both are well known in South African surfing circles and are expected to bring serious energy to the competition.

Local Legends Ready to Defend Home Waters

The South Coast will be strongly represented with a number of local teams stepping into the spotlight.

Crowd favourites include “The Laaities”, made up of:

  • Clay Turrell
  • Jordy Boschoff

Known for their fearless approach in the water, the duo has been steadily building a reputation for taking down bigger names in recent years.

Another consistent and respected team is Shockwave, featuring:

  • Gary van Wierengen
  • Justin Maisch

Both Springbok surfers and experienced surfboard builders, they bring deep knowledge of the ocean and strong competitive experience to the lineup.

Locals will also remember that the last home victory came during the inaugural event in 2017, when Nik Njapha and Byran Wigmore claimed the top honours.

With the competition growing stronger each year, the question now is simple — will the locals reclaim the title?

Music, Food & Beach Vibes All Day Long

Tweni2’s is not just a surf contest — it’s a full coastal festival.

The 2026 event will feature:

  • 5 live bands
  • 5 DJs
  • Beachside food and refreshments
  • A relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere

As the sun sets over Umtentweni beach, the event transitions from surf competition to full coastal celebration.

Family-Friendly Activities on the Beach

The event is designed for the whole community, with activities for both kids and families throughout the day, including:

  • 6-a-side junior beach soccer tournament
  • Sandcastle building competitions
  • Treasure hunts for children
  • Beach games and community activities

It’s a full-day celebration of ocean life, outdoor activity, and South Coast community spirit.

Founded by local surfers Peter Horlock and Derek, the event continues to highlight the importance of ocean lifestyle, youth participation, and community-driven coastal events.

With strong international interest, high-level surfing, and a growing festival atmosphere, Tweni2’s has become a standout date on the South Coast calendar.
