The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast is famous for its beautiful beaches, welcoming communities, and family-friendly holiday atmosphere. But even the best-loved destinations need a little extra care and attention to truly shine. That’s where the Beach Sign Project comes in.
The Tidy Towns Sea Park to Banana Beach team, together with South Coast Explore, has launched an exciting community initiative to install welcome and identity signs at our local beaches. The goal is simple: to give Anerley, Southport, Sunwichport, and Seapark beaches the recognition they deserve — with Banana Beach next in line as support grows.
Why Do We Need Beach Signs?
When you arrive at a beach, the first impression sets the tone for your visit. A well-designed sign not only guides visitors but also creates a sense of pride and belonging.
Here’s why these signs matter:
- Beach identity: Each beach has its own character, and signs highlight that uniqueness.
- Tourism boost: Welcoming signs create a professional, cared-for appearance, encouraging visitors to return.
- Community pride: Locals can take pride in knowing their coastline is showcased with dignity.
- Safety and awareness: Signs can help create awareness about rules, facilities, and conservation efforts.
This is more than a beautification project — it’s about connecting people to place and ensuring our beaches are recognised for the gems they truly are.
What Has Been Done So Far
The Tidy Towns initiative has already made a significant impact on the coastline from Sea Park to Banana Beach. Thanks to volunteers and local support, the team regularly cleans and maintains:
- Anerley Beach
- Southport Beach
- Sunwichport Beach
- Seapark Beach
- Banana Beach
These ongoing efforts have transformed the area, making it cleaner, safer, and more attractive to residents and visitors. The Beach Sign Project is the next step in this journey — a permanent marker of the pride the community takes in its coastline.
The Goal: R30,000 for Five Beach Signs
The project’s fundraising target is R30,000, which will cover the cost of designing, manufacturing, and installing five new beach signs.
Each sign will:
- Carry a unique identity for its beach
- Welcome visitors in a friendly, professional way
- Be durable enough to withstand coastal weather
- Showcase the collective pride of the community
It’s not just about signage; it’s about leaving a legacy that future generations can look to with pride.
How You Can Support
This initiative is by the community, for the community. Every contribution — big or small — will help make these signs a reality.
Here’s how you can get involved:
- Donate as an individual: Even a small donation makes a big difference.
- Sponsor as a business: Local businesses can show their support and benefit from community recognition.
- Spread the word: Share this project with friends, family, and visitors who love the South Coast.
By working together, we can ensure that every visitor who steps onto our beaches feels welcomed and appreciated.
A Lasting Gift for Our Coastline
The Beach Sign Project is more than a fundraiser — it’s a movement of pride, identity, and community spirit. With your support, we can create something lasting that celebrates our coastline while boosting tourism and preserving our local heritage.
Let’s put our beaches on the map with signs that say: Welcome — you’re in a special place.
