The South Coast of Kwazulu Natal South Africa covers approximately 140 km from Amazimtoti to Port Edward. This stretch of pristine beaches offers holidaygoers a destination like no other. This unique coastline offers over 50 beaches with several Blue Flag status beaches which you know are safe to swim in.

If swimming isn’t for you, then visit in the winter period when the weather and sea are colder and the marine life on display is even more spectacular. The annual sardine June and colder weather encourage swaths of birds of prey, dolphins, sharks, whales and sardines. South Coast Main Towns

the South Coast is often divided into three areas: the Upper South Coast, the Hibiscus Coast, and the Inland & Hinterland. Each has its own character, attractions, and unique towns to discover.

Upper South Coast

The northern stretch closest to Durban, the Upper South Coast is known for its easy access, laid-back holiday vibe, great surf, and world-class diving at Aliwal Shoal. It’s a favourite for weekend escapes and family holidays.

Main towns, suburbs, and villages include:

  • Amanzimtoti (Toti) – with suburbs such as Doonside, Warner Beach, Illovo Beach, and Winklespruit

  • Umkomaas – gateway to Aliwal Shoal and famous for shark diving

  • Scottburgh – a popular family-friendly beach town

  • Pennington – quiet village with golf estates and sandy beaches

Hibiscus Coast

The Hibiscus Coast is the tourism hub of the South Coast, stretching from Hibberdene down to Port Edward. This lively region is home to Blue Flag beaches, bustling resorts, and attractions such as Oribi Gorge, making it the heartbeat of coastal holidays.

  • Port Shepstone – the region’s business and commercial centre, with suburbs like Umtentweni, Oslo Beach, and Southport

Inland & Hinterland

Beyond the coastline lies the fertile hinterland, where agriculture, forests, and cultural heritage shape the region. The inland towns are less touristy but rich in history, eco-tourism, and adventure opportunities such as hiking, 4×4 trails, and birdwatching.

  • Harding – largest inland town, serving as a hub for farming and forestry

  • Umzinto – a historic sugar-farming town with strong community links

  • Ixopo – known for agriculture and made famous by Alan Paton’s Cry, the Beloved Country

  • Numerous smaller rural villages that support farming, cultural tourism, and nature-based activities

Scottburgh

Situated near the mouth of the Mpambanyoni River, and just South of Durban Central and Amanzimtoti, Scottburgh is categorized as a coastal resort town spanning approximately 24kms with a subtropical climate and relatively warm weather all year round. This scenic coastal town is a popular tourist destination being one of the bigger towns on the South Coast.

Port Shepstone

Located roughly halfway between Hibberdene and Margate, Port Shepstone is considered a large town spanning roughly 38 km, the biggest on the South Coast. Situated only 120km from Durban at the mouth of the Mzimkhulu River, the largest river on the South Coast, providing opportunities to explore the river. Port Shepstone also houses one of the best hospitals on the South Coast.

Home to the Red Dessert and the Mpenjati Nature Reserve, Port Edward is situated on the border of KwaZulu Natal and the Eastern Cape in South Africa. The last stop on the South Coast, Port Edward is about 24kms and home to the Wild Coast Casino and Wild Waves Water Park this lovely holiday destination is perfect for the whole family.

Margate is the bustling heart of the KZN South Coast, famous for its lively atmosphere, Blue Flag beach, and vibrant holiday scene. As one of the region’s top tourist hubs, it offers an array of attractions including restaurants, cafés, art galleries, and nightspots, alongside shopping centres and a wide choice of accommodation. The golden sandy beach is the main drawcard, ideal for swimming, surfing, and family outings. Each year, Margate also comes alive during the Sardine Run and various cultural events, making it a must-visit destination for both relaxation and entertainment.

Amanzimtoti "Toti" "eManzimtoti"

Amanzimtoti, often called “Toti” by locals, is the northern gateway to the KZN South Coast and a favourite holiday spot just south of Durban. Known for its warm waters and wide sandy beaches, it’s especially popular with families, surfers, and anglers. The town boasts modern shopping centres, a variety of restaurants, and a laid-back coastal vibe, while nearby nature reserves such as Ilanda Wilds and Umbogavango offer birdwatching and hiking trails. Amanzimtoti also plays host to the spectacular Sardine Run each winter, drawing visitors eager to witness this world-famous natural event.

The KZN South Coast offers over 58 beaches with 7 being 2025 Blue Flag Beaches. While the ocean is almost always warm enough to swim – many of the swimming beaches are closed for swimming during winter as the annual sardine run takes place bringing whales, sharks, dolphins and more to the waters.
