South Coast Beach Information

The KwaZulu Natal, South Coast is not only home to amazing world-standard beaches but the South Coast is also home to one of the world’s smallest deserts. The Red Desert Nature Reserve located only 10 km outside of Port Edward features this desert measuring just 200m in diameter and 11 hectares. So-called the Red Desert due to the beautiful red cour of the sand which comes from the iron content in the sand, this attraction is on top of a hillside overlooking the Mtamvuna River an area with an abundance of wildlife. While there is some argument to be made for the fact that the area has too much rainfall to be considered a true desert this natural reserve offers a wonderful hiking trail and mounting bike trails. Please note there are no built facilities.

The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) South Coast is one of South Africa’s most-loved coastal playgrounds — long sandy shores, sheltered tidal pools, family-friendly picnic spots and several Blue Flag beaches that meet strict water quality and safety standards. Whether you’re planning a family beach day, a surf trip, or a peaceful sunset stroll, our guide helps you pick the best South Coast beach for the experience you want.

Blue Flag & top-rated beaches (quick list + why they matter)

Blue Flag status is awarded to beaches that meet high standards for water quality, safety, environmental management and visitor services. On the South Coast, our Blue Flag and consistently well-maintained beaches include: Marina Beach, Trafalgar Beach, Southport Beach, Umzumbe Beach, Hibberdene Beach, Ramsgate Beach and Pennington Beach. These beaches are ideal for families, safe swimming and dependable facilities such as lifeguards, public toilets and parking.

Family-friendly beaches — safe swimming and tidal pools
If you’re visiting with kids, look for beaches with sheltered tidal pools and lifeguards on duty:

  • Marina & Ramsgate: Popular for tidal pools and calmer swimming sections for younger children.

  • Southport: Wide sands and protected swimming areas make it a great family choice.

  • Hibberdene: Offers easy access, parking close to the beach and gentle surf in sheltered bays.

Tips: Check lifeguard flags before entering the water, plan your visit at low tide for rockpool explorations, and pack a sunshade and a first aid kit for peace of mind.

Best beaches for surfing and water sports

For surfers and active families, the South Coast delivers consistent beach breaks and surf schools:

  • Trafalgar & Umzumbe: Known for bigger, more powerful surf — ideal for experienced surfers and surf lessons when conditions are right.

  • Pennington: Offers fun breaks and is popular with local surfers.
Many beaches also run surf schools and offer gear rental — a great way to introduce teens and beginners to surfing safely.

Tidal pools, snorkelling spots & marine life watching – Explore shallow rock pools and snorkel-friendly spots at low tide:

  • Ramsgate tidal pools are sheltered and calm for first-time snorkellers and young children.

  • Southport and Marina have accessible rock-pool areas for spotting small fish, crabs and anemones.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a small snorkel mask for kids — these pockets of marine life are perfect for educational, low-cost family fun.

Hidden gems & quieter beaches to unwind, If you want fewer crowds and peaceful stretches of sand:

  • Banana Beach (when accessible) and smaller coves near Port Edward provide quieter alternatives to the busier summer hotspots.

  • Explore early morning walks — the sunrise and quiet sand give you the coastal views to yourself.

Practical travel tips & accessibility info

  • Parking & access: Most main beaches have designated parking and short walkways. Arrive early in peak season (Dec–Jan) to secure a spot.

  • Facilities: Blue Flag beaches typically offer toilets, waste bins and lifeguards; smaller beaches may be more basic — pack essentials.

  • Safety: Swim between the flags, watch for rip currents, and obey local signage. If you’re unsure about a beach’s conditions, speak to a lifeguard or local vendor.

  • Accessibility: Some beaches have accessible ramps or pathways; check local council or accommodation listings for precise access information before you travel.

When to visit — seasons & conditions

  • Summer (Dec–Feb): Warm, busy and perfect for family beach days — expect peak crowds and full facilities.

  • Shoulder seasons (Mar–May, Sep–Nov): Fewer crowds, warm water, and often great value for accommodation. Ideal for walkers, snorkellers and photographers.
