Come Build a Froggie Pond on the KZN South Coast This Saturday
Community members on the KZN South Coast are invited to roll up their sleeves and take part in a unique environmental project aimed at helping local wildlife. The Bendigo Conservancy is hosting a hands-on event where residents can help build a frog-friendly pond to support biodiversity in the area.
The initiative encourages locals, families, and nature lovers to come together for a morning of conservation, community spirit, and outdoor activity.
A Community Conservation Project
The event will take place on Saturday, 14 March, from 08:00 to 13:00 in Southport. The frog pond will be built at B-Cubed Guesthouse, also known as Leka’s, located on the corner of Hazel Road and the R102.
The goal of the project is to create a safe habitat for frogs and other amphibians. These species play an important role in the local ecosystem, helping to control insects and contributing to the overall health of natural environments.
By building a dedicated frog pond, organisers hope to encourage biodiversity and create a long-term habitat for local amphibian populations.
Hosted by Bendigo Conservancy
The event is being organised by the Bendigo Conservancy, a community organisation focused on environmental protection and conservation in the region.
Projects like the Froggie Pond build aim to:
- Protect local wildlife habitats
- Encourage community involvement in conservation
- Educate residents about biodiversity
- Create sustainable environmental spaces
Local conservation initiatives such as this one help maintain the natural beauty and ecological balance of the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.
What to Bring
Participants are encouraged to come prepared for a bit of hands-on work. Organisers suggest bringing:
- Gumboots
- Tough gloves
- A large spade for digging
The activity will involve digging, shaping the pond, and preparing the environment so that it can support frogs and other small wildlife species.
It’s a great opportunity for families and volunteers to contribute to a meaningful environmental project.
Refreshments Available
Visitors who attend the event will also be able to enjoy refreshments during the morning. Leka’s restaurant, located at the venue, will be open and serving meals and drinks throughout the event.
This makes it a relaxed community morning where volunteers can work together while enjoying the hospitality of a local South Coast venue.
RSVP Details
Those who wish to participate are asked to RSVP before Friday afternoon so organisers can plan the event effectively.

Why Frog Ponds Matter
Frogs are often considered an important indicator species in ecosystems. When frog populations decline, it can signal environmental changes such as pollution or habitat loss.
Creating frog ponds can help:
- Provide breeding spaces for amphibians
- Support insect control naturally
- Encourage biodiversity in local environments
- Educate communities about conservation
Small initiatives like this can make a big difference in maintaining healthy natural habitats along the South Coast.
A Great Way to Get Involved Locally
Community events like the Froggie Pond build are a wonderful way to meet neighbours, support environmental initiatives, and make a tangible impact on local conservation efforts.
Whether you’re passionate about wildlife, enjoy outdoor activities, or simply want to support your community, this event offers a fun and meaningful way to get involved.
